Insulation FAQs
What does an insulation R-value mean?
An insulation product’s resistance to heat flow is measured by its thermal and acoustic resistance or ‘R-value’. The higher the R-value, the more effective that product will be at keeping your home cooler in Summer and warmer in Winter. The insulation R-value depends on a number of factors including thickness, density and what the insulation is made of.
If the R-value is followed by ‘HD’ it means the product is ‘high density’ allowing a higher thermal resistance in a product that takes up less space - perfect if your wall joists are narrower but you still want a higher performing insulation in your building.
What R-value do I need?
The higher the R-value, the more effective the insulation will be at creating a comfortable home environment, absorbing sound and reducing your energy bills. So, in short, we recommend choosing the highest R-value you can afford. It’s also important to consider insulation as a long-term investment—with Australia’s rising energy costs, the right insulation can save you thousands of dollars over the life of your home.

What’s the difference between acoustic and thermal insulation?
Thermal insulation reduces heat transfer helping to keep your home warmer in Winter and cooler in Summer. Acoustic insulation reduces sound transfer helping to reduce the annoyance of noisy neighbours, road traffic, trains, planes or your own kids in the room next door. There are some products that have both properties and are the ideal choice for maximum home comfort including Ecolife Solutions’ recommended Earthwool and EcoTuff insulations.
Is glasswool or polyester insulation better?
Both polyester and glasswool insulation are safe products that are effective in preventing heat and sound transfer. Each of these types of insulation are rated by the same R-value performance so, as long as you’re looking at comparable R-values, neither of the products will outperform the other. That being said, there are some key benefits of Earthwool’s glasswool insulation. These are:
1. A sustainable choice: Earthwool’s glasswool insulation is made from up to 80% recycled glass bottles and contains no added formaldehyde, phenols, acrylics, artificial colours, bleaches or dyes.
2. A cheaper choice: glasswool insulation is cheaper and more efficient to manufacture, therefore, costing the end customer less to purchase. It’s a great way to get the same insulation efficiencies for less money.
3. Fire resistant: glasswool is a non-combustible product—that means it won't catch fire! This makes it a safer choice for the family home than polyester insulation.
4. More efficient: glasswool insulation can achieve the same R-value (thermal rating) as polyester insulation with a much thinner product.
5. High compression factor: more insulation batts can fit in the same size pack as polyester products of the same R-value—this means it takes less space to store the product in a dry place before installation.
Is glasswool insulation safe?
Glasswool has been used to improve comfort in homes around the world for over 70 years. During this time, research has not found any cause and effect link between glasswool insulation and long term health problems.
When using glasswool in Australia, look for the EUCEB and or FBS-1 logo for quality assurance. Some types of glasswool insulation, such as Ecolife Solutions’ recommended Earthwool products, are made without using a phenol formaldehyde binder, making them even safer to use in your home.
Are rodents and/or insects attracted to glasswool insulation?
No. Because glasswool insulation is made using glass it will not attract or provide a food source for rodents or insects.

Can my order be delivered when I’m not home?
While being at home for delivery will ensure your insulation is left exactly where you want it and allows you to double check your order, we understand that this is not always possible. If you are unlikely to be home for delivery, please ensure you:
1. Provide clear delivery instructions for the courier; these can be added to your order during the online checkout process.
2. Notify us during online checkout of any restricted vehicle access or other potential hindrances at the delivery address.
3. Double check the mobile phone number you provide during checkout and answer calls from any unknown numbers in case the courier needs to contact you. If we are unable to reach you, the courier may need to return to our factory with your order and reschedule a later delivery time. Re-deliveries may be at additional cost to the customer.
Can I save money by picking up my order?
Yes, you can. If you would like to pick up your order from either our Brisbane or Sydney factories, please choose ‘pick up’ as the delivery method during checkout. We will then contact you when your order is ready to be collected. Remember to bare in mind how much space you have available in your vehicle for transporting your insulation before choosing the pick up option.
Can I return insulation if I’ve ordered too much?
Yes, you can. Returns must be made within 30 days of purchase and can only be accepted if the product is unopened and undamaged. Please note that leaving insulation products out in the elements can cause damage. To avoid any product not being accepted for return, please ensure insulation is stored in a safe and dry location. All accepted returns will incur a 20% restocking fee. Returns can be made to our factory locations in Brisbane or Sydney. Any return courier costs must be arranged and paid for by the customer.
